After active tooth alignment is finished with braces or clear aligners, we begin the retention phase of your treatment. We generally recommend full-time retainer wear for the first six weeks following removal of braces (except while eating or brushing your teeth). Then, retainers may be worn at night when sleeping. Drs. Fulmer and Eakes continue to check the fit of retainers as needed to ensure that teeth look as great as the day braces are removed.

Wearing a retainer after orthodontic treatment is crucial. Teeth that are not held in place by a retainer long enough for new supporting bone to stabilize around them can drift back to their original positions. If you lose or break your retainer, call us soon to schedule an appointment so that we can ensure the stability of your treatment results.

We offer several different types of retainers, customized to our patients’ individual needs to help keep their smiles looking fantastic after braces or clear aligner treatment has been completed.

Essix Retainer

essix.jpgThe Essix retainer is a clear removable retainer that fits over the entire arch of teeth. Essix retainers have no metal wires and are virtually invisible. They are very durable, inexpensive and easy to wear.

Fixed Retainers

lingualbondedretainer.jpgBonded lingual retainers are cemented directly to the inside surface of your lower canines (eye teeth). This is one of the best ways to prevent your lower teeth from shifting as it is permanently attached! As with removable retainers, it is important to keep them clean. When brushing, carefully clean the inside of your lower teeth as well as the wire. If your retainer breaks at any time during the retention phase, please do not adjust it yourself. Call us immediately to schedule an emergency appointment.

Hawley Retainers

Hawley_retainer.jpgThe Hawley retainer, is a removable retainer made of a combination of metal wires and sturdy acrylic, and is designed to keep your teeth in place. This retainer is specially made from impressions of your teeth so that it fits snugly and comfortably in the roof of your mouth, while any wire or acrylic framing keeps your teeth in perfect position. The acrylic can also be personalized with a large number of colors and/or patterns.
